Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones, is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you'll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it’s haunting. Fired up by the band, it will be a full tilt revival with Chris Merrill on bass guitar, Joe Faulhaber on electric guitar & Nick Chambers on drums!

“Hailed as one of the year's best roots debuts by the Chicago Sun-Times and L.A. Times, and exudes the kind of radiant harmonies and easy acoustic familiarity — spliced with clarinet, accordion and ukulele — that are difficult to fake." Chris Gray, Houston Press.

Featuring the extraordinary singing of Atascadero High School choir director, Emy Bruzzo; the Jethro Tull-type flute work, and Santana-like guitar leads of David Singer; the song writing, guitar, and keyboard playing of John Beccia; and the exciting horn and wind playing of Tom Bruner on trombone, piccolo, and flute; and the rock solid rhythm section of Rich Daulton on drums; Phil Gross on bass; and Victor Rocha on congas, timbales, and percussion; Up in the Air performs all original songs that are upbeat, melodic, and lyrically relevant.

Peppino D’Agostino doesn’t just play the guitar. He composes, arranges, collaborates, improvises and has even been known to sing a song here and there in both English and Italian. But what he does create on the guitar makes the difference between simply playing and truly making music apparent in the most wonderful ways.

D’Agostino has been hailed as “a guitarist’s guitarist” by Acoustic Guitar magazine as well as “a giant of the acoustic guitar” (San Diego Reader), and holds many top guitar awards, but the San Francisco Chronicle encapsulated the essential difference that distinguishes D’Agostino’s music when it dubbed him “a poet.”

From his debut as a jazz influenced blues-based artist to his evolution into a pop music iconoclast, singer-songwriter A.J. Croce has traveled a circuitous musical road. Now, with Twelve Tales, A.J. unveils his most ambitious recording project to date: A dozen new tracks recorded by legendary producers across a variety of American cities to be released one song each month in 2013. A.J. recently signed with Compass Records Group (Colin Haye, Victor Wooten), an independent label that has been touted by Billboard Magazine as one of the leading labels of the past decade. Twelve Tales will come out in early 2014 on Compass Records.

A.J.’s notable producers on Twelve Tales are Nashville’s illustrious late "Cowboy" Jack Clement (Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis); New Orleans’ ambassador of funk Allen Toussaint (Dr. John, Paul McCartney); five-time Grammy winner Kevin Killen (Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel) in Stamford, CT; Grammy and Golden Globe nominee Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Los Lobos) and Tony Berg (Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan) in Los Angeles; and finally Greg Cohen (Tom Waits, John Zorn) in New York City.

The son of legendary singer-songwriter Jim Croce, A.J.’s career began with his first tour at age 18 opening up for B.B. King. In the span of a 20+-year career, A.J. has headlined festivals, concerts and major listening venues worldwide. He has been seen and heard on shows including Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Austin City Limits, Good Morning America, E!, and CNN, and he has shared the stage with an innumerable list of eclectic artists from Willie Nelson to Ray Charles, Béla Fleck to James Brown, Lyle Lovett to Morphine, and Rod Stewart to Ben Harper.

A loyal and appreciative audience and glowing press from Rolling Stone to the New York Times confirms the appeal of A.J’s genre-spanning music, with six of his albums positioned in various radio charts including Top 40, AAA, Americana, College, and Jazz. An ivory-searing New Orleans piano style established an essential juju, but his exploratory pop gems revealed a spectrum of influences from art rock to Americana and beyond. Initially signed as a jazz artist, he subsequently charted with an Americana roots release and recorded two well-regarded releases for BMG Records that expanded his audience exponentially. His subsequent albums were released on various independent labels and his own label, Seedling Records, established in 2003 to release his own records and that of other artists.

Having spent the past three years in Nashville where a packed weekly schedule of co-writing sharpened his writing to a keen edge, A.J. says that back home in California his song craft took an instant turn. “I began writing for myself again,” he confirms. He has recently begun collaborating with the great Leon Russell (“A Song for You,” “This Masquerade”). “It’s a thrill and a little surreal to collaborate with Leon Russell. He’s been an influence and an inspiration as long as I can remember,” says A.J.

A dedicated family man, an adventurous artist and a confident creator; in this phase in his life and career, A.J. is focused less on expectations and more on instincts. “I generally want to do the stuff that makes me feel good,” he says. And like the blues greats who influenced him, A.J. Croce continues to create stellar music with longevity, authenticity and truth. Twelve Tales marks the latest milestone on his illustrious journey.

Silk Artists of the Central Coast
Silk Artists of the Central Coast

The Silk Artists & Painters of the Central Coast will show their amazing pieces the whole month of September.  Visit our Events Gallery any day between 10am-5:30pm to see these works of art!

How is Silk Painting Done?

Silk paintings are created on white silk. The dyes are painted onto the stretched surface of the silk using a paintbrush. The dyes flow into the fiber and bond with the proteins, becoming a part of the silk thread. This is different than oil, acrylic, or watercolor paints which sit on the surface of the support. These paintings are steam set - locking the dyes into the fiber and making the color of the painting reasonably lightfast and washable.

As the history above suggests, silk painting has been with us for a long time. There was a resurgence of interest in silk painting in France in the early 19th century with the discovery of gutta. Gutta is a rubbery resist that can be used to create boundary lines on a silk. The dyes that normally would flow through the silk are stopped at the boundary created by the gutta. This gives the artists control over positioning the dyes on the fabric allowing them to create images.

There are also other more recent materials that help the artist control the way the dyes move through the silk. Many artists use a dye thickener or an antifusant on the surface of the silk to slow the progress of the dyes through the silk. There are many techniques used by silk fine artists to express themselves in this media.

Lazy Locals: End of Summer Celebration

Unfortunately it's almost time to say goodbye to summer but what a great way to do it!  Send off the warm weather while listening to the reggae sounds of Resination.  Castoro wine will be for purchase by the glass or bottle.  Also, bring a picnic or buy lunch here on site and spend the afternoon with us!

Show from 1-4pm.

Please no outside alcohol.

About the band...

Since their formation in 1999, Resination has grown exponentially from a powerhouse quartet, into a nine piece Roots, Rock, Reggae machine that is taking the reggae community by storm. Emitting eclectic sounds of jazz, soul, reggae, funk, and blues, it is no wonder why Resination makes any crowd demographic stop and dance in their spot. On top of the colorful modern roots reggae rhythms that the players of instrument showcase, lead vocalist Vance Fahie takes the crowd on an unforgettable journey of positive energy and conscious messages.

The initial groundwork was laid by lead singer Vance Fahie (AKA "Noche Man"), bassist Ian Hartman, and lead guitarist/backing vocalist Patrick Pearson. The past few years has seen the addition of a horn section comprise of Patrick Rojo Reynolds on trumpet, and Colin Dean on trombone. Thomas Toes Cuffe, provides the essential keyboard rhythms and Mike "Mikey J" Jimenez excels on rhythm guitar. The soulful Empress, Raeme Miner, lends her voice to complete Resination's three part harmonies and takes the lead on a handful of tracks. "Tuff" Tim Cordero lives up to his name and holds down the steady roots rhythm on drums.

Without a doubt, a Resination show is always positive and uplifting, captivating the masses and unifying the people who share the love of not only the music, but also the message it sends!

Preston Reed
SLOFolks Indoor Concert
Preston Reed

The first of our winter concert series, this intimate show will be held in our Events Gallery.  Doors open at 6:30PM, show at 7:30PM.

Tickets $20

“Question: When is an acoustic guitar not an acoustic guitar? Answer: When it’s in the hands of New York visionary Preston Reed.” - Total Guitar

Percussive fingerstyle master Preston Reed, who inspired such latter day flattop heroes as Andy McKee and Kaki King, returns to Castoro Cellars as part of his U.S.A. tour, with a mind blowing new album!

Using the two-handed integrated percussive acoustic technique he pioneered in 1987, Reed fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion that integrate the breathtaking potential of the guitar body.  Preston Reed doesn’t need a band. He is the band.
Twenty-seven years after his idiosyncratic style was born, Reed’s seismic global impact has created a sea of guitarists playing in his style. Today at the height of his game, Reed's recordings and live performances still define the sound of the pioneering compositional guitar genre he invented over a quarter century ago.

The decades since, have seen Reed touring globally. In 2012, the guitarist was an irresistible force, spellbinding the UK and Europe on the 50-date Guitar Masters Tour alongside Andy McKee. He sold out – twice – in Singapore, charmed Irish audiences, and dropped jaws in countries as far-flung as Croatia. That year, as a popular draw on the corporate circuit, Reed’s unique skills saw him requested by global brands including Nike USA, Revolution Growth and the Dubai-based GAC Corporation – while a set at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh has since clocked over a million views.  2013 saw him perform in China, Mexico, South Africa, France, the UK, and Poland.

Preston's live shows are full of contrasts, by turns explosive and sweetly lyrical. He riffs with the conviction and guts of a rock band, yet plays with the subtlety of the most delicate of jazz pianists. There are no fancy gadgets or gimmicky FX - just 6 strings (or occasionally 12), two hands and a daring and innovative musical imagination that crosses all boundaries. With a career spanning over four decades this trailblazer still tours and records with a passion that flows into the hearts, heads and feet of his audience, don’t miss him!

“… widely thought of as the world’s most gifted guitarist” -Total Guitar

“In a class of his own” -London Evening Standard

"A major musical talent” -Manchester Evening News

“Will drop your jaw” -Playboy

“True spellbinding guitar mastery” -Guitarist Magazine

“Heart stopping tour de force” -Billboard

“Reed's fiendishly intricate blend of blues, rock, country and metal styles ducks and weaves itself away from measurability” -The Irish Times
