Art Exhibit: Maeve Croghan
Art Exhibit: Maeve Croghan

For the month April our featured artist will be Maeve Croghan.  You may recognize her work from the label of our Late Harvest Zinfandel or the backdrop on the stage at Beaverstock!  We are proud to have her work return to the newest release of both our Late Harvest Zinfandel and Orange Muscat in addition to the walls of the Events Gallery.
View more work on her website by clicking

Expressionist nature painter Maeve Croghan approaches the traditional subject of landscape painting with a unique vision.  "The process in my painting is essential to my art.  I usually sit on the ground, intensely observing and painting my subject.  There, I am able to gain a deep communion with my subject and its' environment.  This is essential for my art and me."

"My paintings are most often begun outside where I find a subject to paint, enabling me to experience and understand Nature at a very deep level.  I am particularly attracted to old forms of life; aged trees, vines and rocks seem to possess a knowledge beyond human understanding."

"This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family's frontier experience," (Dan Ruby, and Rita’s fans call her “the real deal.” A descendant of Cornish miners who sang in the mines, Rita grew up with deep regard for folk music and the power of the voice.  To read more about Rita click HERE.

More about Pierre Bensusan...

Described by the L.A. Times as "one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today", Pierre Bensusan was voted "Best World Music Guitar Player in 2008" by Guitar Player Magazine Readers Choice. His name became synonymous with contemporary acoustic guitar genius, long before the terms New Age, New Acoustic Music or World Music were invented. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique.

There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His "manner" of playing defies classification - crossing world, classical, jazz, traditional, folk and more. None can be isolated as simply “Brazilian”, "Arabic" or “French”; rather, they represent our world in its current state, a world sharing itself, fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced.

Do not miss this world famous performer!

Art Exhibit: Beti Kristof
Art Exhibit: Beti Kristof

For the month of June Castoro Cellars welcomes Beti Kristof of Las Vegas, Nevada.  She will be displaying her oil on canvas pieces in the Events Gallery.  Stop by anytime between 10-5:30pm daily to enjoy her artwork and sip on some "Dam Fine Wine"!

More about the artist...

Beti Kristof might best be called "Renaissance Woman".  She is a gifted artist who has displayed a level of mastery in art that is rarely seen today.  Her work is offered by leading galleries and is displayed in prominent private collections and corporate headquarters throughout the United States.

Raised in Southern California, Beti now resides in Las Vegas.  She is proud to be the daughter of Hungarian immigrants who escaped communism to raise their child in a free nation. At age 17, Beti was accepted to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. At a young age her talent was so apparent that she was invited to apprentice with two of  Europe's finest artists; Eva and Americo Makk.

While apprenticing in Europe, Beti’s talent gained her invitations to the world of European Art Masters, that most artists only dream of gaining access to ... Her passion for painting led her to the Sacchi Studio in Italy, where she developed her skills further. Beti was invited into the vaults of Pitti Palace, to study and sketch from the original works of Titan, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci, as well as other masters.  She also furthered her skills in life drawing, in the studios of Joseph Sheppard and Madame Simi, in Florence. Upon her return to the United States, Beti continued her training with the celebrated artist, Theodore Lukits.

Beti has demonstrated a wide range of artistic abilities. She has illustrated books; Tiko and the Tramp , Ted's Simple Truth, as well as The First Football ABC Pretzel Book - which she authored as well.
In 2007, Beti was awarded the highly coveted International “Muse Award” for Oil Painting.

Beti’s many public exhibits include: Nevada State Senate, Cirque du Soleil,  Mono County Museum, Hungarian Freedom Fighters Exhibit. She was awarded Public Mural placement for the City of Las Vegas, and created a commissioned sculpture for Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, as well as a commissioned portrait of former Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn and his wife.

Beti Kristof’s many styles of painting and sculpting reflect the depth of her formal training, and add to her well-deserved stature as one of the Southwest’s leading artists.

Beti  is involved with Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, a national organization that comes to the aid and support of families with children who have cancer. Beti has experienced this first-hand, so a portion of the proceeds of THE FIRST FOOTBALL ABC PRETZEL BOOK are donated to Candlelighters. (We are pleased to tell you that she has a child who is a cancer survivor!)

Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer / songwriters of her generation. During her over 40-year career, Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim, commercial success, enduring popularity and the unwavering respect of her peers. In addition to achieving chart success with her own recordings, Karla has seen her songs become hits for such artists as Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd and Linda Ronstadt, and many of Bonoff’s ballads are now pop classics. Throughout it all, Bonoff continues to tour extensively, playing sold-out shows around the world. Her show is a heartfelt litany of one hit after another; with her earthy anthems of soul-searching, heartache, and joy shedding light on secrets of the heart that resonate with so many in a way few can muster today.

Few singer songwriters come to town with as impressive a resume as Karla Bonoff, but even that cannot measure up to spending an evening in the company of her and her craft. Accompanying Bonoff on stage will be guitarist Nina Gerber whose melodic touch, when combined with the voice of another musician of heart, creates honest, powerful and beautiful music in an unforgettable way.

Opening the show will be Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Eric Kufs. As the main songwriter for indie folk bank Common Rotation, Kufs has released six full-length records and written nearly a thousand songs. With the lyrical poignancy of a Will Oldham, the dynamic voice of a Van Morrison, and the passion of a Bruce Springsteen, Kufs will grace Castoro Cellars’ outdoor stage with his sincere and soulful sound for your listening enjoyment.

Escuela del Rio is a day program for adults with developmental disabilities in North San Luis Obispo County. A little more about the band...

The four women who make up the Bay area- based group have some experience with improbable complexities and contradictions. Almost everything about their history is contrary to conventional wisdom. For one thing, they put their individual careers aside to start Blame Sally when they were in their late 30s and 40s—the age at which bands are traditionally supposed to break up and begin solo careers. For another, this is obviously an all-woman band—“girl groups” usually being the novel province of youthful upstarts, not mature singer/songwriters.  To read more about the band click HERE.

Don't forget your dancing shoes!

Show from 1-4pm, free.

Who are The JD Project?

Music can mean many different things to many different people.  For some, music provides the underscore to their lives, always in the background, accompanying their day-to-day activities, but rarely in the forefront.  For others, music is the soundtrack of their lives, often out in front of everything, matching the pulse and mood of their current state.  For others still, music is an art, a science, something to be analyzed.  San Luis Obispo’s own, The JD Project, provides the kind of music that works very well for all three instances.  Their driving blend of rock, blues, soul, and country provides a pulse that is great for a party atmosphere.  It moves you to tap your feet, dance, sing along…basically have a great time.  Their lyrics and musicianship will impress even the most discerning of listeners.  Their live performances are exciting, amusing, and enjoyable while still leaving the opportunity for people to hold a conversation with each other.  All in all, The JD Project is a great band for any occasion where having a good time is at the top of the list of priorities.

Lunch will be available from Jimmy's Food Trailer.

Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones, is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you'll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it’s haunting. Fired by the band, it’s a full tilt revival.

“Hailed as one of the year's best roots debuts by the Chicago Sun-Times and L.A. Times, and exudes the kind of radiant harmonies and easy acoustic familiarity — spliced with clarinet, accordion and ukulele — that are difficult to fake." Chris Gray, Houston Press.

Peppino D’Agostino doesn’t just play the guitar. He composes, arranges, collaborates, improvises and has even been known to sing a song here and there in both English and Italian. But what he does create on the guitar makes the difference between simply playing and truly making music apparent in the most wonderful ways.

D’Agostino has been hailed as “a guitarist’s guitarist” by Acoustic Guitar magazine as well as “a giant of the acoustic guitar” (San Diego Reader), and holds many top guitar awards, but the San Francisco Chronicle encapsulated the essential difference that distinguishes D’Agostino’s music when it dubbed him “a poet.”

Lazy Locals: End of Summer Celebration
Lazy Locals: End of Summer Celebration

Unfortunately it's almost time to say goodbye to summer but what a great way to do it!  Send off the warm weather while listening to the reggae sounds of Resination.  Castoro wine will be for purchase by the glass or bottle.  Also, bring a picnic or buy lunch here on site and spend the afternoon with us!

Show from 1-4pm.

Please no outside alcohol.

About the band...

Since their formation in 1999, Resination has grown exponentially from a powerhouse quartet, into a nine piece Roots, Rock, Reggae machine that is taking the reggae community by storm. Emitting eclectic sounds of jazz, soul, reggae, funk, and blues, it is no wonder why Resination makes any crowd demographic stop and dance in their spot. On top of the colorful modern roots reggae rhythms that the players of instrument showcase, lead vocalist Vance Fahie takes the crowd on an unforgettable journey of positive energy and conscious messages.

The initial groundwork was laid by lead singer Vance Fahie (AKA "Noche Man"), bassist Ian Hartman, and lead guitarist/backing vocalist Patrick Pearson. The past few years has seen the addition of a horn section comprise of Patrick Rojo Reynolds on trumpet, and Colin Dean on trombone. Thomas Toes Cuffe, provides the essential keyboard rhythms and Mike "Mikey J" Jimenez excels on rhythm guitar. The soulful Empress, Raeme Miner, lends her voice to complete Resination's three part harmonies and takes the lead on a handful of tracks. "Tuff" Tim Cordero lives up to his name and holds down the steady roots rhythm on drums.

Without a doubt, a Resination show is always positive and uplifting, captivating the masses and unifying the people who share the love of not only the music, but also the message it sends!
